A Change Point in Practice
Each one of us has reached what is called a change point in practice the likes of nothing else we have encountered. In contemplation of a change point we see the limits of body & mind. Both birth & death take on a greater importance than the world itself.
It is a significant place, a place worth contemplating.
It is simple in breadth and depth yet it carries with it a strong wave of energy. It requires a decision and even when we take up the challenge and make a decision we hesitate to acknowledge it.
The potency of reality comes from our capacity to be a person of integrity through and through and thoroughly so. We take up a serious examination in retreat from our past habits. We study past selves and accept without disparagement the damage done. The acceptance allows us to forgive the mistakes made. The acceptance and forgiveness, however, do not eliminate the consequences of karma.
When we accept and forgive our harms-done we are more able and willing to accept the karmic results without running or fighting against the results.
Rituals
Most have particpated in rituals from baptisms to marriage to funerals. In-between we may have contributed good works for much or most of our lives up to this change point.
Yes! We have mixed feelings about our actions, whether good or bad, but somewhere within us we acted in a good intention to do something in the world that helps others.
Of course, there often is an additional intention in helping others as way to get something for ourselves.
The ego’s selfish involvement must be disregarded.
The placing value or devalue on our intentions and acts is to be dropped. Forget it. We stop measuring what we gave. Counting up our good deeds is a mistake.
If we made these mistakes of counting how-good, we need to use our willpower to stop the calculations. “Admit the self-interest and forgive ourselves” Mistakes made!
It will help clear off the fabricated habit of condemning and measuring self and condemning and measuring others. If we find ourselves looking for gratitude or thanks, the ego is involved. When the ego is involved we must admit the mistake and forgive ourselves.
We admit that we are conditioned to look for praise. We have forgotten that we are conditoned to measure, evaluate, and weigh the behavior of ourselves and others.
These conditions are an insidious projection of poison. “Forget it. What of it.”
Now once we, (each one of us) are able to clear off the tendencies we have made into habits we are able to see the change point.
At this point we see two roads ahead…like the well-known image of a fork-in-the-road.
The two directions are rather simple:
(1) continue to live as though rituals and doing good works are the highest we will go and there is nothing higher than doing so…
(2) seek that which is the transcendent which does not rest in the self-doing good and wanting praise for doing good. Compassion an wisdom are the basis of the transcendent.
We are encouraged to give without reward. To be compassionate and wise. This is the change point in practice!
Don’t give up. Keep going.
Go with the flow the way nature wants to flow – without expectations and without the need to classify or think of fulfilling. There is no end in a circle.
Study where you are headed. Study the journey right now. Right where you are.
