Before or After Listening to the Podcast of Chapter Twenty Three.
In Susan’s reflection we notice Susan is overwhelmed. But then she stops herself and tries to sort out the other woman, Mrs. Geesky. As the reflection continues she searches to “understand.”
The search to understand another person is a downfall in power. We are able to study our mental formations, we can make decisions about our life. This requires an ability to realize the fleeting quaility of mental forms. Fear, anger, helpless, confusion all come under the fleeting forms of the mind. They are empty. We can make decisions to be generous and giving even if it comes in the form of silence.
But, to understand the mind of the other is fraught with clouds of imagination, judgement and measurement.
Susan begins to explain to herself her own shortcomings and inadequacy of her mind. As the reflection continues she counts science as limited, and herself as helpless in the face of Mrs. Geesky. BUT…she changes for a moment when she notices she is “looking in the wrong direction.”
To get caught in the other is getting entangled and even attached to what the other is and what we think the other should do or be. Susan knows Mrs. Geesky will be back - and she senses that what she has to offer will not be acceptable.
